Introductory Online Spanish Course

for Health Care Professionals

Welcome to the National Autonomous University of Mexico. With roots dating back to 1551, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México has more than 450 years of historical and academic tradition, serving as a center of educational excellence, generational knowledge, and cultural dissemination. UNAM serves more than 350,000 students in México and across the globe. UNAM Chicago seeks to carry out the university’s rich history of academic excellence and foster a healthy relationship between our countries.

This online self-guided course of Spanish for Healthcare professionals has been designed for you by UNAM Chicago, in collaboration with the UNAM Center of Open and Distance Learning.

This course is targeted for medical students and health care professionals who want to be introduced to the Spanish language to serve Spanish-speaking patients.

The student will be able to conduct some stages of the medical interview in Spanish.

The content and activities are aimed to prepare participants to elicit some stages of the medical interview. Each didactic unit has oral and auditory texts, practice exercises, grammatical explanations, a bilingual glossary, and a reflection on the contrast between the cultural behaviors of Latinos and Americans within the context of healthcare.

This course is organized in three units that must be completed in six weeks. Participants have two weeks per unit to complete all activities and submit the final task through the forums.

Final tasks are evaluated by a Spanish instructor. Participants can always be in touch with the instructor and other participants through the message service at the Moodle platform and through the forums.

No book is required for this level.

Asynchronous learning

You can work on this course at your own pace. The course has been designed with an asynchronous interactive part with a Spanish instructor and your peers through the unit forums.  It also includes a communicative task at the end of each unit that is evaluated by the instructor, so you can receive feedback.

The texts, contents, exercises, and explanations of grammar are in Spanish. Some characteristics of the Spanish variety used in the USA are also included. English is used only in the bilingual glossaries and in the sociocultural reflections provided.
